johnlink ranks LORD OF THE FLIES
This is one I might not have watched if it wasn’t directed by Peter Brook who wrote a book about acting and directing called The Open Door which I am very much a fan of. When you go to the IMDB page for this film, one of the lead photos declares it an ‘Essential Art House Film’. So is it?
johnlink ranks THE CRAZIES
I followed up a terrible remake in FRIDAY THE 13TH with this remake of George Romero’s THE CRAZIES. A major difference here is that the 1980 version of FRIDAY is considered a classic by horror fans, whereas THE CRAZIES was known to be a flawed film (though well-liked in some circles).
johnlink ranks FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009)
Decided to follow up the Oscars with a movie I was surprised wasn’t a winner at the Razzies. Really, I had little interest in seeing this, but it came through HBO HD, and I figured I could give it a chance and see if maybe it would surprise me. At the very least, a slasher flick couldn’t be too bad to watch once, right?
johnlink ranks RIGHT AT YOUR DOOR
This movie is one which has been on my radar for the past couple years. I’ve newly discovered IFCHD (Independent Film Channel HD) on Cox, and am loving the offerings, all unedited and commercial free. I have BAD LIEUTENANT and AMERICAN BUFFALO DVRd, and hope to get to those soon enough. In the meantime, we can start with this small suspense film.
johnlink ranks SPARTAN
I remember liking this movie, but absolutely nothing else about it. I knew it was a spy-thriller. I knew Val Kilmer was in it. But I don’t remember anything about watching it five or six years ago. How good a film could it be if I couldn’t remember anything about it?
johnlink ranks SHUTTER ISLAND
So here we are at the end of February, and I’m finally seeing my first film released in 2010. You would think that working at a movie theater would afford me more opportunities to watch movies. But I digress. The following will contain HEAVY SPOILERS. It is impossible to talk about this film without spoiling some things. BE WARNED NOW, WATCH THE MOVIE BEFORE READING!
rankings explained
Here is a refresher on what the rankings mean at the end of each of my articles.
johnlink ranks PCU
Not feeling too great on this Thursday evening, but wanted to try and stay up for the Celtics-Lakers game. Figured I could catch a short movie on-demand before it went up. Found PCU on HBO, which was a 90s flick I’ve heard to be funny. So, here we go…
johnlink ranks EVENT HORIZON
This is a movie which I have trouble pegging. In some ways I think of it as an underrated horror-sci/fi flick, but on the other hand… well… it’s not particularly great. The last time I watched this movie was in Liz’s dorm room at RIC six or seven years ago on a thirteen inch TV. Not exactly ideal viewing conditions.
johnlink ranks AMERICAN PIE
It had been a long time since seeing this movie, one which is now considered somewhat of a landmark in R-rated comedy. ANIMAL HOUSE holds up to the passing of time, as does DAZED & CONFUSED. I was curious to see if this did as well, now that it is eleven years old.
